SYDNEY, Australia — Tesla posted its best-ever monthly sales result in Australia in May 2026, delivering 6,443 vehicles — a figure that topples the previous all-time record of 6,017 set in March 2024, a peak that had held for more than two years.

The milestone was confirmed June 2 by the Electric Vehicle Council, which tracks EV registrations across the country. Combined Tesla and Polestar sales also set a new high for the month at 6,681 units — up 61.4 percent from May 2025 and a striking 358 percent jump from April 2026 alone.

Model Y Leads the Charge

The Model Y was the undisputed engine of the result, accounting for 5,605 of those deliveries and cementing its position as Australia's best-selling electric vehicle. The Model 3 also contributed meaningfully, with 828 registrations — nearly triple its figure from a year ago.

Tesla's country director for Australia and New Zealand, Thom Drew, attributed the performance to the company's sustained commitment to delivering world-class electric vehicles and an ownership experience that continues to raise the bar for the industry.

A key driver of May's record was the Model Y L, the only six-seat battery electric SUV available in the Australian market. Priced from AUD $74,900 before on-road costs, the three-row variant has drawn particularly strong interest from families and commercial buyers looking to electrify without compromising interior space.

EV Surge Accelerates

Electric Vehicle Council CEO Julie Delvecchio framed the result in the context of a broader national shift. "More Australians are choosing electric. When fuel prices hurt, people look for alternatives. Electric vehicles offer exactly that — no trips to the servo, no price spikes at the pump, savings of around $3,000 a year," she said.

Australia is in the middle of a sustained EV surge driven by persistent fuel price pressure, and Tesla has been the clearest beneficiary of that trend.

Tesla's Turnaround in Australia

In 2025, Tesla faced headwinds in Australia tied to the rollout of the updated Model Y and consumer sentiment shifts. The new figures suggest that friction has largely dissipated. For the year to date through May, Tesla is now running 56 percent ahead of its 2025 pace in Australia — a recovery rate that outpaces the broader market.

With the Cybercab expected to expand to additional markets later this year and ongoing fleet demand for the Model Y, Tesla appears well-positioned to sustain and potentially surpass this new benchmark in the months ahead.
