AUSTIN, Texas — The Tesla Model Y claimed South Korea's top spot among all passenger vehicles in May 2026, with Tesla recording 10,866 imported registrations during the month — the third consecutive month the brand has surpassed the 10,000-unit mark in the country.

The figure is striking in context: BMW, the nearest competing import brand, managed 6,555 registrations in May. Mercedes-Benz came in further behind at 3,553 units. Tesla's total was more than 65% higher than its closest rival.

Model Y Leads the Charge

Within Tesla's Korean total, the Model Y Premium accounted for 7,195 units in May, with the longer-wheelbase Model Y L Premium — a configuration offered in select markets — contributing another 1,513 registrations. The remaining volume came from other Tesla models rounding out the lineup.

The Model Y's dominance in South Korea reflects a global pattern: the vehicle has ranked as the world's best-selling passenger car for three consecutive years, with total cumulative deliveries surpassing 4 million units earlier in 2026.

250% Growth Year-Over-Year

Tesla's year-to-date performance in South Korea tells an even more compelling story over a longer time horizon. Through the first five months of 2026, Tesla delivered 45,020 vehicles in the country — a 250.8% increase over the same period the previous year. The brand now holds a 30.8% share of South Korea's entire imported car segment for the year.

That kind of market penetration in a country long dominated by domestic automakers Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis — alongside premium European imports — marks a significant shift in Korean consumer preferences toward electric vehicles.

Part of a Broader International Surge

South Korea's numbers are the latest in a string of international sales milestones for Tesla in 2026. The company recently posted a 39.4% year-over-year gain through Gigafactory Shanghai, set new records in Australia, and saw triple-digit growth in France and Spain. The pattern suggests that Tesla's global demand recovery is now gaining sustained momentum across multiple major markets simultaneously.

For South Korean buyers, the appeal of the Model Y centers on its combination of range, software features, and total cost of ownership. Tesla's Supercharger network in South Korea has expanded significantly over the past two years, removing one of the key remaining barriers to EV adoption.

With Tesla's Cybercab expanding in the United States and Optimus moving toward larger-scale production, the company's product portfolio continues to grow — but for now, the Model Y carries the weight of global sales performance with remarkable consistency.
