SAN FRANCISCO — Grok is about to take on its most ambitious job yet: helping run a humanoid robot. On Tesla’s July 22 second-quarter earnings call, executives described how Grok, the AI built by SpaceXAI, is being positioned as an intelligence layer for Optimus, part of a deepening collaboration between Elon Musk’s companies.
The plan puts Grok at the center of what Tesla calls Digital Optimus, a software version of the robot that learns skills before they are transferred to physical machines.
Digital Optimus Comes First
Tesla explained that Digital Optimus will arrive before physical Optimus is fully capable, because the robot needs skills developed and trained in software to operate computers and systems. The approach mirrors the end-to-end philosophy behind Full Self-Driving: pixels in, controls out. In practice, a user should be able to ask Optimus to do something and have it act without step-by-step programming.
Grok is central to that vision. Company leadership said Grok will help drive Digital Optimus, drawing on the same conversational intelligence that has expanded rapidly inside Tesla vehicles. Grok already handles navigation, reminders, and, with the latest updates, hands-free vehicle commands, and it is rolling out across all of Europe and more of Asia.
A Data Flywheel for Robots
Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said Optimus is designed to match not just the appearance but the dynamics and dexterity of humans, enabling it to perform virtually any task a person can. To train it, human workers provide examples, a specialized team curates high-quality demonstrations, and internet how-to videos supply additional data.
The company described an Optimus Academy that will let early robots train more robots through reinforcement learning, a flywheel that accelerates as the fleet grows. Grok-class models provide the reasoning and language understanding that stitches those capabilities together, turning raw demonstrations into generalized skills.
Two Companies, One AI Stack
The Grok-Optimus link is one more sign of how tightly Tesla and SpaceXAI are converging, with shared work spanning chips, compute, and now robotics. Musk has repeatedly pointed to growing overlap between the companies, and the continued advance of the Grok model line gives Optimus a fast-improving foundation to build on.
According to Tesla’s Q2 earnings call, the goal is a robot you can simply talk to, one that understands intent and carries it out. If Grok becomes the mind of Optimus as planned, it would extend Musk’s AI from the car and the phone screen into a machine that can walk, grasp, and work, an audacious next step that could define the coming years.
