SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk is making good on one of his more unusual promises. Late Friday, xAI's Grok Imagine released the first episode of an AI-generated retelling of Homer's Odyssey, the opening installment of a planned series produced entirely with the company's generative video tools.

The debut episode runs a little over seven minutes and dramatizes the Greeks' arrival at Troy, the prelude to Odysseus's long journey home. Musk had pledged back in July that Grok Imagine would produce a full-length Odyssey that was "historically accurate and true to the art of Homer," and the first chapter is the clearest sign yet that the ambition was more than a passing idea.

A Showcase for Grok Imagine

The project is as much a demonstration as a film. Grok Imagine is xAI's AI video generator, and turning out a multi-episode period epic is a public stress test of how far the technology has come. The series is being produced in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, both of whom specialize in generative-AI filmmaking, and the team leaned into the moment with a pointed post: "Homer didn't have Grok. We do."

For xAI, now part of SpaceX, the Odyssey is a marquee way to put Grok Imagine in front of a mass audience. The same models that power the company's assistants, covered in our look at how SpaceX opened a Grok Super Intelligence Partner Network, are now being pointed at long-form storytelling — a market that has historically required enormous budgets, large crews and months of post-production.

Why It Matters

Generative video is advancing faster than almost any other corner of AI, and a sustained narrative project is a far harder challenge than a single clip. Keeping characters, settings and tone consistent across minutes of footage — let alone across multiple episodes — is exactly the kind of problem that separates a demo from a tool. By shipping a real series rather than a teaser, xAI is signaling confidence in Grok Imagine's consistency and staying power.

It also fits a broader pattern at the company, which has pushed Grok into search, encyclopedias and productivity. The launch of consumer-facing efforts like Grokipedia showed xAI's appetite for taking on established categories, and filmmaking is among the most ambitious yet.

What Comes Next

Musk framed the Odyssey as the first of several episodes, suggesting more installments will follow as the models improve. Each new chapter will double as a progress report on how quickly generative video is closing the gap with traditional production. More on the company's models and tools is available at xAI.

Whether or not the AI Odyssey rivals a big-budget studio film, the project stakes out a bold claim: that a small team armed with Grok Imagine can attempt an epic that once demanded a Hollywood backlot. For a technology that was producing shaky seconds-long clips not long ago, a seven-minute opening episode is a striking leap — and a preview of where Musk believes AI storytelling is headed.
