FREMONT, Calif. — Neuralink is moving its most ambitious project yet closer to reality, advancing its Blindsight visual implant toward first human trials while its broader brain-computer interface program keeps expanding across new countries. The company's goal is bold and specific: restore a basic form of sight to people who have lost their vision entirely, including those born blind.
How Blindsight Works
Blindsight bypasses the eyes altogether. A wireless implant placed in the brain's visual cortex receives a feed from an external camera and stimulates neurons directly, generating the perception of light and shapes without any signal from the optic nerve. Neuralink has secured an FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for the system, a status that speeds review for technologies addressing unmet medical needs. Early output is expected to be low-resolution, but the company frames it as a foundation to build on, much like the way Tesla's driver-assistance stack has grown from modest beginnings into a system now helping senior drivers keep their independence.
A Growing Clinical Footprint
Neuralink's flagship PRIME study, which lets paralyzed participants control computers and devices with their thoughts, has grown steadily. The company has expanded trials internationally, adding sites in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates, and the number of implant recipients has climbed past two dozen as surgeons refine the procedure. Each new participant helps the company gather the safety and performance data regulators want to see before a device reaches the wider public.
