HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX is in talks to supply the Pentagon with billions of dollars worth of data-center computing capacity, a potential arrangement that would place Elon Musk's rocket and satellite company at the center of the U.S. military's push into artificial intelligence.
The discussions, first reported by The Wall Street Journal on July 17 and confirmed by multiple outlets, would have SpaceX provide computing power to the Department of Defense at a cost of up to several billion dollars. The talks are ongoing and could still change, but they underscore how quickly SpaceX has moved from launch provider to full-stack technology company.
A New Front in SpaceX's AI Expansion
Once known mainly for reusable rockets and Starlink, SpaceX has rapidly become an AI-infrastructure player after acquiring xAI earlier this year and folding Grok development into the newly branded SpaceXAI division. That momentum has helped fuel investor interest since the company's market debut and analyst coverage put a spotlight on its expanding business lines.
The company has built massive data centers, including the Colossus cluster in Memphis, and has touted an even more ambitious vision of placing data centers in orbit to escape the power and land constraints that limit terrestrial computing.
Competing With the Cloud Giants
Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Oracle already supply computing capacity to the Pentagon, but SpaceX is positioning itself to compete directly, reportedly planning to undercut providers such as CoreWeave on price. A defense contract would give the Department of Defense additional cloud resources to support AI applications across national-security and warfighting operations.
SpaceX has already signed cloud-computing deals with Anthropic, Google, and Reflection AI, agreements that together represent roughly $27 billion to $28 billion in annualized revenue at full rates. Layering a Pentagon contract on top would broaden a customer base that now spans frontier AI labs, hyperscalers, and potentially the federal government. The same launch cadence that keeps Starship marching toward full reusability is what SpaceX hopes will eventually loft compute nodes into space.
From Memphis to Orbit
For Musk, the logic is consistent: AI scaling demands more power and space than Earth can cheaply provide, so SpaceX intends to supply both the ground infrastructure now and the orbital capacity later. Rounding out its terrestrial footprint with government contracts helps fund that longer arc.
According to Yahoo Finance, the discussions reflect a company expanding aggressively into cloud computing while its rockets continue flying at record pace. If a deal comes together, SpaceX would add the U.S. military to a client list that already reads like a who's who of the AI era, reinforcing the case that Musk's space company has quietly become one of the most important computing suppliers in the country.
