HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX's Starlink Mobile has notched another milestone, with Italian carrier FASTWEB completing the country's first video call over the satellite-direct network on an ordinary 4G smartphone in the Umbrian Apennines.
Starlink confirmed the successful test on September 17, describing satellite antennas that "act like cell towers in space" to keep customers connected where terrestrial coverage drops out. FASTWEB framed the same trial as Italy's first satellite call on a normal handset, with the link traveling roughly 360 kilometers above Earth through the Direct to Cell system. No special dish, add-on antenna, or app was required to place the call.
How Direct to Cell Works
The technology lets unmodified phones attach automatically to Starlink satellites when 4G or 5G is missing, extending a lifeline into valleys, mountains, and remote stretches that traditional towers never reach. Messaging, voice, and video run through compatible apps alongside SMS and MMS, and the network is designed to hand off seamlessly as satellites pass overhead. It is the same constellation strategy behind SpaceX's broader push to weave space-based connectivity into everyday devices.
For now the Appennine pilot remains a carrier experiment reserved for trial participants rather than a nationwide consumer launch, and traditional cellular voice over the satellite path is still being validated. But the demonstration proves the core capability works on the phone already in a customer's pocket.
