Starlink Tops 10 Million Users as Direct-to-Cell Scales

HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX's Starlink network has surpassed 10 million subscribers, cementing its position as the world's largest satellite constellation and the profit engine underneath the company's far larger ambitions.

The milestone comes as roughly 9,600 satellites now beam broadband to homes, ships, planes and, increasingly, ordinary phones. Starlink has become SpaceX's biggest revenue maker and its only consistently profitable segment, a foundation that funds everything from Starship development to the company's expanding compute business.

Direct-to-Cell Takes Off

The most consequential growth is coming from Starlink's direct-to-cell service, which lets standard mobile phones connect straight to satellites with no special hardware. What started as basic text messaging is expanding toward data, turning dead zones on hiking trails, at sea and across rural highways into places where a normal handset simply works.

That capability leaps forward with the next-generation hardware SpaceX just began orbiting. As we reported when Starship Flight 13 deployed the first 20 Starlink V3 satellites, the V3 birds are built for a step-change in throughput — each capable of far more downlink capacity than the V2 units they succeed.

Why Capacity Is the Whole Game

More subscribers only work if the network can feed them, and this is where the V3 generation matters most. The new satellites promise roughly ten times the downlink capacity of the prior design and a large jump in uplink, letting Starlink add users without degrading speeds. Scaling V3 depends on Starship, since the larger satellites are too big for Falcon 9 to carry efficiently. That ties Starlink's growth directly to Starship's maturing flight cadence — and Flight 13's clean deployment and record-soft reentry suggest that pipeline is opening up. At more than 10 million subscribers and climbing, Starlink is no longer a promising side project — it is the commercial backbone of SpaceX.
