AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla's software update 2026.20 is rolling out this week with a batch of new features, and among them is a notable extension of the company's in-car AI program: the xAI-powered Grok assistant is now available to drivers in Chile, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Hong Kong, completing the chatbot's most ambitious international expansion to date.

As of June 5, the update had reached approximately 9 percent of the global fleet, with more vehicles receiving the push daily. In addition to the Grok expansion, update 2026.20 also introduces automatic dashcam clip encryption and new parental controls for in-vehicle apps.

Grok Goes Global

The "Hey Grok" wake word and hands-free voice interface — introduced as part of Tesla's Spring 2026 update — are included in the full feature set rolling out to these four new markets. Drivers can invoke the assistant by saying "Hey Grok" or by long-pressing the steering wheel voice button, and the interface supports open-ended queries, navigation commands, and location-based reminders.

The latest wave follows a methodical country-by-country rollout that began in the United States, expanded to Canada, then moved to European markets and later to Australia and New Zealand. That global march now encompasses most major English-speaking markets, large parts of Europe, and a growing footprint across Asia.

A small number of markets — including Norway and the Czech Republic — still lack access to Grok, though Tesla has not indicated whether technical, regulatory, or content-moderation factors are responsible for the gap.

Parental Controls and Dashcam Security

Update 2026.20 arrives with two other notable additions. The new Parental Controls feature allows owners to block access to the in-vehicle Browser, Theater, and Arcade apps while the car is in Park, providing families a straightforward way to manage what young passengers can access on the touchscreen during trips. Blocked apps appear grayed out in the interface, giving a clear visual indicator.

Dashcam Clip Encryption, rolling out in select countries, automatically encrypts video recordings at the point of capture. The encryption key is tied to the owner's Tesla account rather than stored in plain text on the USB drive — a meaningful privacy upgrade for owners who rely on Sentry Mode and dashcam recording in sensitive locations.

What's Coming Next for Grok

Right now, Grok in Tesla vehicles is operating in an early Beta phase. The assistant handles navigation, general Q&A, and location-based reminders, but vehicle control functions — HVAC, lighting, seat adjustments — are not yet voice-addressable through Grok.

Tesla has confirmed plans to expand Grok's cabin-manager role in future updates, enabling drivers to control core vehicle functions by voice. The longer-term vision, endorsed by Musk, is for Grok to eventually interact with FSD itself — letting drivers describe where they want to go and how they want to drive, in natural language, without touching the touchscreen.

With Grok now live in more than 30 countries and xAI's image-to-video Grok Imagine 1.5 already available on the developer API side, the two Musk companies are tightening their integration at an accelerating pace. The next major milestone for in-car Grok is expected to be the addition of basic vehicle control commands, with a timeline tied to software updates later in 2026.
