AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla reported that active Full Self-Driving subscriptions reached 1.74 million by the end of the third quarter, a 67% jump from a year earlier and a sign that the company's highest-margin software product is finding a mass audience.

Software Becomes a Growth Engine

The 1.74 million figure, disclosed with Tesla's Q3 2026 results, reflects both monthly subscribers and owners who paid upfront for the capability. Either way, it marks a steep acceleration for a product that monetizes Tesla's fleet without the cost of building another car. Software revenue carries far higher margins than vehicles, and the growing base helped services and other revenue climb 33% in the quarter, as detailed in our Q3 earnings coverage.

The milestone also follows Tesla's work to widen the pool of eligible cars. Last week the company extended its latest stack to older vehicles, bringing FSD v14 to legacy Intel-based Model S and Model X owners who had been left on earlier software.

Why the Number Matters

Each new subscriber compounds Tesla's data advantage, feeding more real-world miles into the neural networks that power its driver-assistance and autonomy features. That flywheel — more cars, more miles, better models — is central to Tesla's pitch that it can deliver unsupervised driving at scale. The company's regulatory progress abroad, including its recent nod to roll out supervised FSD in China, widens the addressable market further.

A Recurring Revenue Base

With 1.74 million active subscriptions and growing, FSD is shifting from an option box into a durable recurring-revenue line that scales with every delivery. Tesla detailed the subscription accounting in its shareholder materials, as reported by Electrek.

As the fleet grows and the software improves, Tesla's software business looks increasingly like the high-margin engine that can power profits well beyond the car itself.
