AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla's Gigafactory Shanghai has rolled out its 6 millionth battery pack, another milestone for the company's largest and most heavily utilized production base in the world.
Tesla announced the achievement on Chinese social media, sharing images of employees celebrating beside the landmark pack. The plant reached the mark just 279 days after producing its 5 millionth pack in November 2025 — roughly 1.3 million packs a year, or about 3,580 every single day.
A Manufacturing Powerhouse
The battery packs built in Shanghai power the Model 3 and Model Y for both the domestic Chinese market and a growing list of export destinations. Tesla says every pack passes multiple rounds of stringent testing, offering strong performance, long lifespans, and high safety standards.
Located in Shanghai's Lingang New Area, Giga Shanghai was Tesla's first vehicle plant outside the United States and China's first wholly foreign-owned auto manufacturing project. Since production began at the end of 2019, it has contributed nearly half of Tesla's global EV deliveries and now runs at an annual capacity of about 1 million vehicles. The factory's momentum echoes Tesla's broader manufacturing push, from Optimus entering production at Fremont to new model variants rolling off the line.
Exports Powering Record Output
The battery milestone lands during a standout year for the plant's output. In the first seven months of 2026, Giga Shanghai delivered more than 561,000 vehicles across all markets, up nearly 30% from the same period last year.
Exports have been the engine. The factory shipped a record 66,330 vehicles overseas in July alone, accounting for nearly 71% of its wholesale sales that month. Through the first seven months of the year, Shanghai exported 295,324 vehicles — already more than it sent abroad in all of 2025, and a jump of about 130% year over year. That export strength has turned the plant into a global hub supplying customers far beyond China, including a returning lineup for markets such as Canada.
A Growing Lineup
Tesla is not standing still on product, either. Regulatory filings in China recently revealed a new Model Y variant, widely expected to be a performance version, carrying a 78.4 kWh battery pack and a 659-kilometer range, with a top speed of 250 km/h and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Once launched, it could become the flagship of the Model Y family and add another draw for buyers. Tesla has been steadily broadening its range worldwide, including the six-seat Model Y L now reaching U.S. buyers.
Steady Hands, Big Numbers
