AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla closed out its first full year in India on a high note, posting a record 294 vehicle registrations in September 2026 and signaling that one of the world's largest untapped car markets is finally starting to move in the company's favor.

The milestone caps a year of steady groundwork. Tesla launched in India in July 2025 and began deliveries that September, opening its first showrooms in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. Since then the retail footprint has widened to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Noida, putting Tesla storefronts in front of a far larger slice of the country's fast-growing urban middle class. The September surge pushed registrations across the debut year to roughly 993, according to registration data cited by Electrek.

The Model Y L Does the Heavy Lifting

The single biggest driver of the ramp is the six-seat Model Y L, which launched in India in April 2026 and began customer deliveries in June. In just four months it racked up about 425 registrations and accounted for roughly 81% of Tesla's September volume — proof that Indian buyers gravitated to the roomier, three-row configuration built for larger families. The success mirrors the enthusiasm that greeted the trim elsewhere, a story we covered when Tesla widened the Model Y lineup with new L and Performance variants.

Pricing has been the other lever. Tesla introduced the Model Y in July 2025 at roughly $70,000, a steep figure in a market where import duties still reach as high as 110%. In late May 2026 the company trimmed the entry Model Y by about 15%, to around $53,000, while the Model Y L arrived at about $65,000 — undercutting the car it effectively replaced. The combination of a sharper price and a more practical body style is exactly what turned a quiet start into a record month.

Momentum Without a Factory

What makes the ramp notable is that Tesla pulled it off purely through imports. The company has not committed to building a plant in India, meaning every delivery so far has cleared the country's steep tariff wall. That the numbers are climbing anyway speaks to genuine pent-up demand — and it leaves enormous upside if Tesla and New Delhi ever strike a deal on local assembly that could lower sticker prices sharply.

For now, the trajectory is what matters. February 2026 marked the low point at just 29 registrations; September delivered ten times that. A market that began with 69 cars is ending its first year with its best month yet, and the momentum is building just as Tesla's global machine fires on all cylinders following a record third quarter. Tesla's 486,532-vehicle Q3, which topped Wall Street estimates, shows the demand engine is healthy worldwide.

India remains a long game. But the September record, the Model Y L's breakout, and a widening showroom network all point the same direction. If Tesla can keep the curve bending upward through year two — with or without a local factory — the country could graduate from a rounding error to one of the company's most important growth stories of the decade.
