AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla put the new Model Y L in the spotlight this week, hosting a media event at its Los Angeles Diner to show off the features that set the extended, six-seat version of its best-selling crossover apart ahead of first U.S. deliveries later this year.

The Model Y L is the longer-wheelbase, three-row variant of the Model Y, and it arrives as an important addition to Tesla's U.S. lineup. Priced at $61,990, it slots in as the roomier family option the company needed after phasing out the Model X, and it is already rolling off production lines at Gigafactory Texas. Tesla brought the model to the U.S. just months after its European registrations and China sales showed renewed strength.

What Sets the L Apart

The Model Y L pairs a six-seat, captain's-chair layout with a suite of features not found even on the Premium Model Y. Among the standouts revealed at the event is multi-row climate control, letting the front passenger jump directly to any row from a dedicated column of icons on the touchscreen. Tesla also noticeably improved rear-window visibility, addressing one of the more common complaints about the standard Model Y's rearview sightlines.

The extended crossover ships with PowerShare bidirectional capability in North America, delivering up to 11.5 kW to a home when paired with a Powerwall 3. Buyers also get 89 cubic feet of cargo space, a 19-speaker audio system, adaptive damping, and integrated Grok AI alongside FSD Supervised.

Built for Hot Climates

Some of the most practical upgrades are in thermal management. Tesla says the Model Y L delivers up to 15 percent faster cabin cooling, a 23 percent gain in thermal efficiency in hot weather worth about seven miles of real-world range, and a glass roof that reflects eight times more solar energy while cutting heat entering the cabin by 30 percent. Those numbers, surfaced during the showcase and detailed in Teslarati's report on the event, matter for a family vehicle expected to spend long summer days on the road.

The car offers 325 miles of range and a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, a balance of efficiency and performance that keeps it squarely in Tesla's value-forward tradition.

Strong Early Demand

Tesla says the Model Y L is nearly sold out in the U.S., a sign of pent-up demand for a larger three-row electric option from the automaker. Early "Launch Series" units add door-trim puddle lights, a suede dashboard wing, special badging and other touches, and come bundled with a year each of FSD Supervised, Supercharging and Premium Connectivity.

The rollout dovetails with Tesla's broader software momentum, including its continued push to widen FSD access across its fleet. With deliveries slated to begin in the coming months and demand already outrunning early supply, the Model Y L looks set to give Tesla's most popular nameplate fresh momentum heading into the back half of the year.
