AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla's push to become the world's largest maker of humanoid robots reached a tangible milestone this week, as the company began firing up its first dedicated Optimus production line at the Fremont factory and Elon Musk pointed to concrete progress on the assembly floor.

The line rising in Fremont is the same one that, only months ago, built the Model S and Model X. Tesla tore down that decades-old vehicle line and rebuilt it for Optimus in roughly four months, a conversion Musk has called one of the fastest line changeovers any automaker has ever attempted. The last Model S and X units rolled off in early May; by late July, robot production tooling is coming online in their place.

From vehicles to robots in record time

Musk has been candid that the ramp will start slow. Optimus carries more than 10,000 unique components, almost none of which have ever been through high-volume manufacturing, and the CEO has repeatedly said output this year will be paced by "the least lucky, slowest, dumbest part in the entire 10,000."

That caution is a feature, not a bug. Rather than chase a headline number, Tesla is prioritizing a stable, repeatable process it can scale — first teaching the robots simple factory tasks, then layering on complexity as the line matures. It is the same crawl-walk-run approach that eventually turned the Model 3 line into the highest-volume premium car program in the world.

Building the workforce behind the workforce

Hardware is only half the story. Tesla is pairing the Fremont line with its new "Optimus Academy" effort to train robots at scale, using teleoperation and vast amounts of real-world data to give each unit the dexterity to handle useful work. The combination of an in-house production line and an in-house training pipeline is exactly the vertical integration that has defined Tesla's advantages in cars, batteries, and self-driving.

A second, far larger Optimus factory is already under construction at Giga Texas, with production expected to begin around summer 2027. That plant is designed to build the higher-volume next-generation variant and eventually push toward Musk's long-stated ambition of millions of robots a year.

Why it matters

Optimus represents what Musk describes as potentially the most valuable product Tesla has ever made — a general-purpose robot that could tackle dangerous, repetitive, or simply undesirable work. Getting the first line running, even at low volume, converts years of prototypes and demos into a manufacturing reality.

For a company that just reported its first $100 billion revenue year and is leaning hard into AI and robotics, the Fremont line is a proof point. The robots may move slowly off the line at first, but the line itself is now real — and at Tesla, that has historically been the hardest part to get right.
