Elon Musk's Family: Parents, Siblings, and Early Influences

Maye Musk (born Maye Haldeman in 1948 in Regina, Saskatchewan) moved with her family to South Africa as a child and later became a model and a registered dietitian.^[1][2][11] She raised her three children largely as a single parent after her divorce and has said she worked several jobs at once to support the family.^[1][3]

Maye has remained a prominent public figure in her own right, continuing a modeling career into her seventies and publishing a memoir, A Woman Makes a Plan, in 2019.^[3][13] She has spoken warmly of her children's ambitions while also describing the practical hardships of raising three kids alone.^{[1][3][9][10]}

The two co-founded Zip2 in 1995, and Kimbal later invested in and served on the boards of both Tesla and SpaceX.^[2][6] Kimbal went on to build a separate career as a restaurateur and food-focused entrepreneur, founding The Kitchen Restaurant Group and the nonprofit Big Green, which builds outdoor classrooms and school gardens.^[6]

The brothers have described a close bond forged partly by shared hardship in their South African childhood, including bullying and their parents' divorce.^[1][2]

Tosca Musk, Elon and Kimbal's younger sister, is a filmmaker and television producer.^[2][7] She has directed romance and holiday films and co-founded Passionflix, a streaming service specializing in film adaptations of romance novels.^[7][13] Tosca has spoken about growing up alongside her more famous brothers and pursuing an entertainment career distinct from their technology ventures.^[7]

Musk's maternal grandparents, Joshua and Winnifred "Wyn" Haldeman, moved their family from Canada to South Africa in 1950 and became known for flying a single-engine plane on long-distance expeditions across Africa and, reportedly, from South Africa to Australia.^[1][2] Family members, including Musk himself, have said stories of the Haldemans' adventurousness and appetite for risk influenced his own outlook.^[1][8]
