American Airlines to Install Starlink Wi-Fi on 500+ Aircraft

American Airlines announced it will equip more than 500 narrowbody Airbus aircraft with SpaceX's Starlink Wi-Fi beginning in Q1 2027, delivering up to 1 Gbps of broadband connectivity to passengers and offering the service free to AAdvantage members.

FORT WORTH, Texas — In a milestone for SpaceX's Starlink commercial aviation business, American Airlines announced on May 26 that it will install Starlink — the fastest in-flight Wi-Fi available — across more than 500 of its narrowbody aircraft beginning in the first quarter of 2027.

The deal makes American one of the largest airlines in the world to adopt Starlink's low Earth orbit satellite internet system, joining a growing roster that includes United Airlines, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, and Singapore Airlines, which announced its own Starlink partnership earlier this month.

What Passengers Can Expect

Starlink's Aero Terminal, the hardware installed on aircraft, supports up to 1 gigabit per second of throughput per antenna — enough to support simultaneous streaming, video calls, collaborative tools, and online gaming across an entire cabin at the same time. Unlike legacy geostationary satellite systems that suffer from high latency due to signals traveling 22,000 miles to orbit and back, Starlink's constellation operates at altitudes between 340 and 1,200 miles, delivering response times comparable to ground-based broadband.

American plans to roll the service out across its fleet of Airbus A321neo and A321XLR narrow-body jets, among others. The airline's Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden called the installation part of a broader effort to elevate the onboard experience.

"As a premium global airline, we are continuously seeking out world-class partners like Starlink to deliver what our customers need and want," Garboden said. "Starlink's high speed and low latency make the Wi-Fi more reliable, which matters when customers are trying to load pages, join real-time collaboration tools or stay connected consistently throughout a flight."

Starlink Wi-Fi will be available free of charge to AAdvantage loyalty members — a meaningful perk for frequent flyers who currently pay for inferior connectivity on American's existing fleet.

SpaceX's Aviation Business Gains Altitude

For SpaceX, the American Airlines deal represents a significant commercial expansion of its Starlink Aero product. The company's Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales, Jason Fritch, said SpaceX is focused on making every flight a connected experience from gate to gate.

"Whether traveling for leisure or business, Starlink enables a fully connected experience gate to gate, making every flight smoother and more enjoyable," Fritch said.

The Starlink aviation market has been one of the fastest-growing segments of SpaceX's commercial business. The company now counts some of the world's largest carriers as partners, and its hardware is being installed on aircraft operated by airlines serving hundreds of millions of passengers per year.

Growing Starlink Footprint

American's announcement comes weeks after Singapore Airlines confirmed it would bring Starlink to its Airbus A350-900 and A380 long-haul fleet beginning in early 2027 as well. The two announcements in a single month underscore how rapidly airlines are moving away from traditional satellite providers.

As of May 2026, Starlink's constellation has grown to more than 10,000 active satellites in low Earth orbit, with more than 600 configured to support direct-to-device connectivity. The sheer scale of the constellation — the largest in history — gives Starlink coverage advantages that legacy providers cannot match.

A Century of American, a New Era of Connectivity

The timing of the announcement is notable: American Airlines is celebrating its centennial year in 2026, marking 100 years since it began as an air mail carrier in the Midwest. Installing the world's most advanced satellite Wi-Fi system as part of its centennial modernization effort is a fitting symbol of how far aviation connectivity has come.

The airline operates more than 6,000 daily flights to over 350 destinations in 60 countries, carrying more than 200 million passengers annually. Even a partial Starlink rollout across its fleet will place SpaceX-powered connectivity in the hands of tens of millions of travelers each year — a potent combination of SpaceX's technology and American's reach.
