CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX is set to add another marquee mission to its busy summer manifest, with a Falcon 9 rocket scheduled to carry AST SpaceMobile's next-generation BlueBird 11, 12 and 13 satellites to orbit from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station early Wednesday, August 5.

A Pre-Dawn Launch

Liftoff is targeted for 3:42 a.m. EDT, with a backup opportunity at 5:10 a.m., according to AST SpaceMobile. The trio of satellites builds on the successful June launch of BlueBird 8, 9 and 10 and continues a rapid deployment campaign that has become one of the most closely watched partnerships in the commercial space sector. The mission also adds to a remarkable launch tempo that has kept SpaceX flying almost non-stop through 2026, a pace we chronicled when the company logged its 90th orbital launch of the year.

Doubling Down On Direct-To-Cell

The BlueBird satellites are designed to beam cellular broadband directly to standard, unmodified smartphones — no special hardware required. AST SpaceMobile says the next-generation units use a stackable architecture and lightweight composite structures that allow several large satellites to fly on a single rocket, accelerating the buildout of what the company calls the first space-based cellular network of its kind.

These Block 2 BlueBirds are expected to deliver nearly double the peak download speeds of the company's first-generation satellites, which recently demonstrated speeds of about 98.9 Mbps directly to phones. AST SpaceMobile has struck agreements with roughly 60 mobile operators representing more than 3 billion subscribers, including AT&T, Verizon and Vodafone, positioning the constellation to reach users far beyond the range of traditional cell towers.
