Lufthansa to Roll Out Starlink Wi-Fi Across 850 Jets

HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX's Starlink is about to blanket one of Europe's largest aviation groups. Lufthansa confirmed it will switch on high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi aboard its first Airbus A320neo on August 19, kicking off a rollout that will eventually reach more than 850 aircraft across ten Lufthansa Group airlines.

Faster Than Home Internet, at 35,000 Feet

The Cologne-based flag carrier says passengers will enjoy connectivity that "in many cases is faster than their internet connection at home or in the office," enabling video streaming, cloud-based work and other high-bandwidth tasks that older cabin systems could never support. The advantage comes from Starlink's low-Earth-orbit satellites, which sit far closer to the ground than the distant geostationary hardware most airlines have relied on, slashing latency and boosting speed. The move is the latest sign of how quickly carriers are racing to replace slow onboard Wi-Fi with Starlink.

Best of all for travelers, the service will be free — available to Miles & More loyalty members and Travel ID users, both of which anyone can join at no cost. "Our product promise doesn't end with the seats or the menu — today, connectivity is also an integral part of a truly outstanding onboard experience," said Lufthansa Group Chief Commercial Officer Dieter Vranckx.

Ten Airlines, One Network

The 850-aircraft figure spans the group's full roster, including SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Eurowings and Discover Airlines, with SWISS, Austrian and Brussels among the first to follow Lufthansa itself. The group expects to finish installations across all travel classes on every member airline by 2029. It is one of the largest single commitments to Starlink Aviation to date, and it adds to a tally that already exceeds 40 airlines and more than 1,400 equipped aircraft worldwide.

The Lufthansa deal fits neatly into the broader vision Musk has been sketching, in which Starlink becomes the connective tissue for everything from jets to cars. He argued this week that satellite links will eventually be wired into every vehicle on the road to handle surging AI bandwidth, the same logic now playing out at cruising altitude.

A Growing Cash Engine

For SpaceX, aviation is another high-value lane for a Starlink business that already serves more than 12 million subscribers and is posting rapid revenue growth. Airlines pay premium rates for reliable, high-throughput connectivity, and each new fleet deal deepens the recurring revenue that helps fund SpaceX's ambitious launch and AI investments.

Lufthansa has even drawn up etiquette rules for the new bandwidth, requiring headphones for audio and video and barring voice calls and live streaming in the cabin — a small sign of how transformative fast, free internet in the sky is expected to be. When the first upgraded A320neo lifts off on August 19, it will mark another step in Starlink's march from rural rooftops to the world's busiest flight paths.
