Musk Predicts SpaceX Will Reach AI 'Pole Position'

SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk is setting an aggressive timeline for his artificial-intelligence ambitions, telling investors that SpaceX — which now houses the Grok models after folding xAI into the newly public company — could vault to the front of the AI race within half a year.

"I am cautiously optimistic that SpaceX will have a Fable/GPT-6 level model in 2 to 3 months," Musk said, referring to the frontier tier occupied by the industry's most capable systems. He went further on the company's trajectory: "If our second derivative remains strong, SpaceX will reach pole position in about 6 months." The comments were highlighted in an analysis published by The Motley Fool.

From Rockets to Reasoning

The prediction lands just weeks after the debut of Grok 5, the most capable model the team has shipped, and reflects how quickly Musk has repositioned SpaceX as an AI company as much as a launch provider. Since SpaceX went public in June 2026 at roughly a $2 trillion valuation, management has framed artificial intelligence — not rockets — as the larger long-term opportunity, pointing to a total addressable market it pegs at $26.5 trillion for AI versus about $370 billion for space.

The Compute Behind the Claim

Musk's confidence rests on a compute base that few rivals can match. The Colossus supercomputer complex has expanded relentlessly, with the second-generation cluster adding hundreds of thousands of Nvidia's newest accelerators. That firepower feeds Grok's training runs and, Musk argues, explains the "second derivative" he keeps citing — not just improvement, but improvement that is itself speeding up.

Why the Timeline Matters

Reaching a Fable/GPT-6-level model would put SpaceXAI shoulder to shoulder with the field's leaders, and doing it in months rather than years would validate the vertically integrated bet Musk has made — owning the chips, the data centers, the energy and the models under one roof. For the millions of users who have already made Grok part of their daily routine, from the car to the desktop, the payoff would be a smarter assistant arriving far sooner than the industry expected.

If Musk is even roughly right about the pace, the next two quarters could reshape the competitive map of artificial intelligence — and give SpaceX shareholders a second growth engine running alongside its rockets.
