CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX is moving fast to give Starship a second launch site on the East Coast, with crews at Kennedy Space Center's historic Launch Complex 39A racing to finish the pad and catch hardware that will let the giant rocket fly from Florida for the first time.
The push comes as SpaceX closes in on Starship's first fully orbital flight, a milestone that would open a new chapter for the most powerful rocket ever built. Building A Second Starship Home
At LC-39A, crews are preparing to install the hardened roof required for booster and ship catches, with the LR-11000 crane standing by for the lift. In the flame trench, SpaceX has poured the center floor, with the ramps next in line before the trench walls go in. Several water-deluge tanks are already in place, and the first large propellant-storage tanks have arrived, matching the 1,700-cubic-meter liquid-oxygen design SpaceX uses elsewhere at the pad, according to on-site tracking by NASASpaceflight. Inside the Gigabay at nearby Roberts Road, electrical, plumbing, and crane systems are being fitted out, while a second Florida pad at SLC-37B is also under development.
The Orbital Milestone Ahead
A Federal Communications Commission filing submitted September 1 targets September 15 for Starship Flight 14, the first flight SpaceX is licensing as an orbital mission and the first tasked with delivering Starlink V3 satellites to an operational orbit. Two major pre-flight tests are already complete: Booster 21 fired all 33 Raptor engines in a full-duration static fire on August 28, and Ship 41 completed a six-engine static fire on August 21. Flight 14 will lift off from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, the only active Starship complex today.
Why Florida Changes The Math
LC-39A is hallowed ground, the pad that sent Apollo astronauts toward the Moon and launched Space Shuttles for three decades. Turning it into a Starship complex gives SpaceX a high-cadence East Coast option alongside Starbase, while Vandenberg on the West Coast now shoulders most Falcon 9 Starlink launches. No firm date has been set for the first Florida Starship launch, but the pace of concrete, steel, and tank work suggests the wait is measured in months, not years. When it arrives, a second operational Starship pad would mark one of the largest expansions of American heavy-lift capacity in a generation — and another sign that SpaceX is building the infrastructure for a future where Starship flies early and often.
