HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX just pushed its Starlink constellation past 11,000 satellites, but the company's paperwork suggests that figure is merely a rounding error against what it intends to build next. In a filing with the Federal Communications Commission, SpaceX has sought authority for a next-generation "Gen3" system of up to 100,000 satellites designed to deliver multi-gigabit broadband to consumers, enterprises, governments and, notably, billions of AI-powered devices.

The scale is staggering, but it fits SpaceX's pattern of setting targets that sound impossible and then methodically closing the gap. The current network already surpassed a major milestone this week, when a Falcon 9 flight from California carried the constellation past 11,000 active satellites. Gen3 would multiply that footprint nearly tenfold.

Flying Lower, Delivering More

Under the proposal, the Gen3 spacecraft would operate in very low Earth orbit shells at altitudes near 325 and 475 kilometers — closer to the ground than today's satellites, which cuts latency and boosts capacity. The filing requests continued use of existing Ku, Ka, V and E-band spectrum, plus new "greenfield" W and D-band frequencies spanning 92 to 275 gigahertz, a vast swath of largely untapped bandwidth that could support enormous data throughput.

SpaceX says the expanded system aims to deliver multi-gigabit symmetrical broadband and eventually handle a majority of the world's internet traffic. That ambition dovetails with the company's push into satellite-to-phone service, which recently brought direct-to-cell coverage to new markets, and with a broader vision of connecting not just people but the sensors, vehicles and machines of an increasingly automated world.

Riding on Starship

The catch, as with much of SpaceX's roadmap, is Starship. The Gen3 network — and the larger V3 satellites that promise roughly ten times the bandwidth of current hardware — depends on the payload capacity and launch cadence of the fully reusable vehicle now working through its test campaign. Falcon 9 has proven it can deploy Starlink in batches of two dozen at a time, but populating a 100,000-satellite constellation on any reasonable timeline requires a heavier, cheaper ride to orbit.

Regulatory review will take time, and approval is far from guaranteed at this scale. The plan, detailed in reporting by Teslarati, still must clear the FCC and coordinate with other operators and international regulators. But the filing makes SpaceX's intent unmistakable: Starlink is not approaching a ceiling but sketching a far larger one.

If the company executes even a fraction of the Gen3 vision, the network that already blankets more than 160 countries could become the connective tissue for the AI age — a global, low-latency backbone stitching together homes, ships, aircraft, phones and the billions of devices that will define the next decade of computing.
