BOCA CHICA, Texas — SpaceX is running two Starship campaigns at once, and both point to a rapid-fire fall at Starbase. The company completed multi-day catch-related testing with unflown Ship 42 at Pad 2, then rolled the vehicle back to the production site for engine installation ahead of static-fire testing — all while Flight 14 hardware sits ready for a launch now targeted no earlier than September 22.

The choreography shows a program shifting from one-off test flights toward the repeatable, catch-and-reuse cadence that has always been Starship's endgame.

A dress rehearsal for the catch

Ship 42 is Flight 15 hardware, not the ship assigned to Flight 14, and it still lacked flight engines — a sign this was a structural and interface test campaign rather than a pre-launch step. On September 12 it was rolled into the launch tower's "chopsticks" and lifted into what looked like a simulated catch position at the top of Pad 2.

In the hours that followed, engineers worked the chopsticks' pins and arms against the vehicle, rotated the arms west, and lowered the ship to meet the quick-disconnect arm before raising it back up and rotating it back and forth. SpaceX held the ship in place for an extended period, likely to confirm the chopsticks could support a ship after a catch. As NASASpaceflight documented in its Starbase report, the wide opening of the arms gives an incoming ship a larger target, while the ability to translate a caught vehicle provides margin if it arrives slightly off-center.

Two boosters, two ships, one fast cadence

The testing did not happen in isolation. Booster 22 left the production site on September 8 and joined Ship 42 at Massey's test area for a series of cryogenic proof tests, then rolled back to Mega Bay 1 on September 12 to prepare for its own engine installation and static fire. Ship 42, after its tower rehearsal, returned to the production site over the weekend to resume preflight work before heading back to Massey's for a static fire of its own.

Both Flight 15 vehicles remain at least several weeks from flight readiness. But the parallel work means SpaceX could move quickly once Flight 14 clears the pad — a tempo that builds on the reuse discipline already visible in the Falcon program, which this year passed 103 Falcon 9 flights and a climbing booster-reuse record.

Flight 14 leads the way

Flight 14 is still next in line, now no earlier than September 22, and it is not planned as a catch attempt — a clean return of the Flight 14 vehicles is what would open the door to catches on Flight 15. The mission continues the milestone push that regulators recently cleared, when the FAA signed off on Starship's first orbital flight.

If Flight 14 goes well, SpaceX has hinted Flight 15 could follow on a much shorter timeline — possibly within a month — putting the chopsticks work seen with Ship 42 into operational use. Each rehearsal at the tower is another step toward a future where Starships are caught, inspected and flown again, and the past week at Starbase suggests that future is arriving faster than the calendar once implied.
