AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla is turning Supercharging into a year-long competition with a remarkable prize: lifetime free charging. The company announced its 2026 Free Supercharging Competition this week, promising to crown nine owners in January 2027 who will receive free Supercharging on their vehicle for as long as they own or lease it, the same coveted perk early Model S and Model X buyers once enjoyed.
How the contest works
The competition runs across all Supercharging sessions from January 1 through December 31, 2026, and builds on the Charging Passport feature Tesla rolled out late last year. Tesla splits the world into three regions: the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and EMEA. Within each region, it will name one winner in each of three categories: the longest trip measured by consecutive unique Supercharger sites, the most unique sites visited, and the most total energy charged in kilowatt-hours. That gamified approach mirrors the safety and referral incentives explored in our look at Tesla connected-app features that have become central to ownership.
To enter, owners simply enable charging-data sharing in their vehicle settings and open the 2026 Charging Passport in the Tesla app at least once before January 1, 2027. Sessions that already happened earlier in 2026 count retroactively, so participants are not penalized for joining after the June announcement.
Gamification with real rewards
The Charging Passport functions like a year-in-review for Tesla owners, akin to a Spotify Wrapped for road trips. It maps visited Superchargers and tracks stats such as total energy charged, unique sites, and miles added, while awarding collectible badges for milestones, iconic locations, and special events. The 2026 contest layers high-value prizes on top of that experience. Tesla has steadily expanded the perks and amenities around its network, from lounges to new on-site features like the recently added free car vacuum at a Supercharger.
