Tesla's 2026 Summer Update Reaches Fleet With New Traction Control

AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla's biggest software drop of the season is now reaching cars across the fleet, and owners are finding a few pleasant surprises that were never in the original release notes. As the 2026 Summer Update installs on customer vehicles as the 2026.26 build, drivers have uncovered a redesigned traction control menu that gives them more control in slippery and low-grip conditions.

Three New Traction Control Modes

The refreshed system introduces three modes: Auto for everyday driving, Slippery Surface for icy or wet roads, and Stuck Assist for freeing a vehicle bogged down in snow, mud or sand. The change replaces the older Slip Start setup and points to a more polished, situation-aware approach to grip management, one that should make winter driving and off-pavement escapes noticeably easier. A Smarter Grok Behind the Wheel

The headline feature of this year's update is a far more capable Grok. The in-car assistant can now take actions rather than just answer questions, adjusting climate settings, opening the glovebox, playing music and responding to conversational commands. It is the deepest integration yet of Musk's AI assistant into the driving experience, and it arrives as Tesla continues weaving Starlink and AI ever tighter into its vehicles, a strategy underscored by the recent unveiling of a Cybercab with an integrated Starlink antenna.

Navigation also gets smarter. A new Automatic Navigation feature learns a driver's routines and can suggest and route to regularly visited places — a school drop-off on the way to work, or the gym on the way home — while a Preferred Routes option lets owners lock in the paths they like best. Other additions bring app-side conveniences into the car, including custom screen wraps, arrival-energy settings, camera and microphone support in the browser, and Caraoke with singing scores saved to a driver's profile.

The Summer Update caps a productive stretch for Tesla's software team, which has been shipping improvements at a rapid clip. The company recently brought its latest V14 driving smarts to older HW3 cars, and the steady drumbeat of over-the-air upgrades continues to set Tesla apart from rivals whose vehicles change little after leaving the showroom.

Not every feature reaches every car — vehicles with older Intel-based infotainment computers miss out on a handful of extras like Grok Commands and Caraoke scoring — but the fleet-wide rollout underscores the value Tesla owners get long after purchase.
