AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla has expanded the color palette for its best-selling crossover in Europe, adding Coastal Blue to the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive lineup and giving entry-level buyers a fourth paint option for the first time since the trim launched last fall.

The new shade, announced officially by Tesla Europe on June 5 via the company's social media accounts, is produced at Gigafactory Berlin — a facility Tesla has described as home to the "most advanced" automotive paint shop in the world, capable of applying more layers than traditional systems and producing colors that shift subtly with the vehicle's curvature.

A Gap Filled for Base Trim Buyers

Before Coastal Blue's arrival, the Model Y RWD in Europe offered a narrow color selection compared to higher-end trims: Stealth Grey as the standard no-cost option, Pearl White Multi-Coat, and Diamond Black, both available as €1,300 upgrades. The base trim deliberately omits several premium features found on the Long Range and Performance variants — including rear infotainment, ambient cabin lighting, and ventilated seats — to hit a lower price point across European markets.

Coastal Blue joins the lineup as another €1,300 upgrade, consistent with the pricing of the other non-default options. For buyers who found the existing palette too conservative, the addition provides a meaningfully different aesthetic without stepping up to a higher-priced trim.

Navigating Tesla's Growing Blue Portfolio

The launch of Coastal Blue brings Tesla's global Model Y blue color count to four. Sawyer Merritt, a closely followed Tesla analyst and commentator, noted on X that the company now produces Coastal Blue, Marine Blue, Frost Blue Metallic, and Glacier Blue across its various Model Y configurations worldwide.

Each shade occupies a distinct position in the spectrum. Marine Blue — a deeper, richer blue available on Premium and Performance trims in Europe — launched as a European exclusive last fall before Tesla expanded it to North America in May 2026. Frost Blue Metallic, an icy pale shade that originated on the now-discontinued Model S and Model X, transferred to the Model Y Performance in the U.S. Coastal Blue sits between Marine Blue and Frost Blue in tone, lighter than Marine but warmer than Frost.

Giga Berlin's Paint Shop as a Competitive Asset

Tesla has consistently highlighted Giga Berlin's paint capabilities as a competitive advantage in the European market. The facility's multi-layer process allows for color complexity that older single-coat systems cannot produce — a selling point in a market where premium European automakers have long competed heavily on paint quality and customization.

The paint shop expansion is one component of a broader investment push at Giga Berlin. In May 2026, Tesla announced a $250 million investment in on-site 4680 battery cell production, more than doubling planned annual cell capacity to 18 gigawatt-hours and adding over 1,500 jobs. Plant manager André Thierig has said production output will increase approximately 20 percent beginning in July.

A Possible North American Expansion Ahead

The trajectory of Marine Blue suggests Coastal Blue could follow a similar path. Marine Blue launched as a European exclusive before crossing the Atlantic to Gigafactory Texas's paint operations in May 2026. If that pattern holds, North American Model Y buyers could see Coastal Blue appear in their order configurators within the next several months.

Tesla has not confirmed any plans to expand Coastal Blue beyond Europe, but the company's recent approach to color launches — introducing shades at Giga Berlin first, then evaluating demand before broader rollout — makes further expansion plausible.

For European customers ordering a Model Y RWD today, the choice is now Stealth Grey, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, or the newly available Coastal Blue. All premium paint options carry the same €1,300 premium, leaving the aesthetic choice as the only variable.
