AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla is preparing to walk U.S. auto-safety regulators through the engineering behind its Cybercab, after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked the company to detail how it self-certified the purpose-built, two-seat robotaxi. The routine information request, reported this week and covered by Electrek, gives Tesla a chance to put the data behind its most ambitious vehicle on the record.
A Purpose-Built Robotaxi
The Cybercab is unlike anything else on American roads: a steering-wheel-free, pedal-free two-seater designed from the ground up for autonomous ride-hailing. Because it breaks from a century of car design, it naturally invites fresh questions from regulators who are used to conventional controls. Tesla has said it is confident in its safety case and welcomes the opportunity to explain how the vehicle meets the intent of federal standards.
Self-certification is the long-established framework under which every automaker attests that its vehicles comply with U.S. safety rules, then stands behind that attestation with test data. Tesla is following the same process it and its peers have used for years, and the company has already begun shipping Cybercabs from Giga Texas with Starlink connectivity built in, a sign of how far the program has matured from concept to production line.

The company's conventional vehicles have repeatedly earned top marks in crash testing, including a clean sweep of five-star ratings across every NHTSA category for the 2026 Model 3.
