Tesla Brings ByteDance's Doubao AI to Its Cars in China

AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla is giving its Chinese drivers a smarter, chattier co-pilot. The automaker has begun rolling out a software update that integrates ByteDance's Doubao large language model into its locally sold vehicles for the first time, powering a dramatically upgraded in-car voice assistant.

The 2026.14.13 update began reaching owners in batches on July 31, covering the Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X in China. With Doubao onboard, Tesla says the assistant can hold natural conversations, answer real-time questions, and even sing, debate and tell stories. 'Time on the road, even driving alone, no longer feels lonely,' the company wrote in a Weibo post.

Localizing the Cabin

The move marks a substantive step in Tesla's push to tailor its cabin experience for Chinese buyers, where homegrown rivals have long offered richly capable voice assistants. Drivers can choose among multiple voices and pair the assistant with personalized personas, with the feature available to owners who hold a Premium Connectivity subscription.

It also mirrors Tesla's AI strategy elsewhere. In the United States, Tesla vehicles lean on Grok, the assistant built by Elon Musk's xAI, and the company recently expanded Grok's in-car powers through its 2026 Summer Update. In China, where Grok is not offered, Doubao fills that role — part of a broader plan that has also seen Tesla work with ByteDance's Volcengine cloud unit.

Built for Chinese Drivers

Doubao is tuned for the local market, designed to recognize a wide range of regional dialects and respond conversationally. For now the assistant focuses on chat and information rather than direct vehicle control, though Tesla has signaled that deeper capabilities are on the roadmap. Reports in Chinese media suggest Alibaba's Qwen model is also in advanced testing for Tesla vehicles, hinting at an even more capable assistant to come.

The upgrade fits a pattern of Tesla sharpening its China offering as it courts local buyers. The company has been steadily broadening its lineup and features there, including the six-seat Model Y L it recently showcased at a splashy unveiling event.

A Smarter Ride Ahead

By plugging best-in-class local AI into millions of cars, Tesla is closing what had been seen as a weak spot against Chinese competitors — and turning the cabin into a more engaging, voice-first space. As CnEVPost reported, the Doubao rollout is Tesla's first third-party large language model integration in China, and likely just the beginning of a far more conversational drive.
