AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla told a packed room here Thursday night that its Robotaxi fleet has now logged 1 million miles in fully unsupervised mode, a milestone that arrives as the company begins its next chapter in autonomy with the Cybercab.

Vice President of Autopilot and AI Ashok Elluswamy delivered the number from the stage at Tesla's Cybercab event, telling attendees, "I'm happy to announce that we have achieved 1 million miles of unsupervised Robotaxi operation." It is a word Tesla uses precisely: these are miles driven with no human in the decision loop, distinct from its human-assisted ride-hailing.

A Sharp Acceleration

The pace of progress is the headline. As recently as the company's July earnings update, Tesla had recorded roughly 380,000 unsupervised miles, a total we chronicled when the fleet first crossed that threshold in our report on Tesla's early driverless mileage. Adding more than 620,000 miles in about six weeks means the fleet is now compounding faster than at any point since launch.

That acceleration matters because unsupervised miles are the truest test of the system. Every mile without a safety driver is a mile in which Tesla's vision-based neural networks handle sensing, prediction, and control end to end. The steep climb suggests the software has reached a level of confidence that lets Tesla remove humans from more of its Austin operation.

Cybercab Enters the Fleet

The milestone was announced alongside the commercial debut of the Cybercab, Tesla's purpose-built two-seat autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals. According to reporting from Electrek, Tesla registered an initial batch of 45 Cybercabs for Austin service, a deliberately measured start for a vehicle designed from the ground up for driverless ride-hailing.

Purpose-built hardware should compound the mileage gains further. Cybercab was engineered around Tesla's Full Self-Driving stack rather than retrofitted onto an existing passenger car, and Tesla is targeting operating costs below 20 cents per mile, a figure that would reshape the economics of urban mobility if achieved at scale.

Momentum Beyond Austin

The million-mile mark also lands as Tesla lines up expansion.
