Tesla Opens Its 50,000-Truck Nevada Semi Factory Thursday

SPARKS, Nev. — Tesla will formally inaugurate its dedicated Semi factory here on Thursday, September 24, giving the long-awaited electric truck program its first true grand-opening moment. The invite-only ceremony pairs factory tours with ride-alongs in the production truck and marks the plant's public debut — roughly five months after it quietly began ramping volume production.

The event caps a nine-year journey for a truck first unveiled in 2017, and it arrives with unusual momentum behind it.

A factory built for scale

The 1.7 million-square-foot plant sits directly next to Gigafactory Nevada in Sparks, built as part of a $3.6 billion expansion Tesla announced in early 2023. Its defining advantage is vertical integration: Tesla placed most Semi manufacturing under one roof, next to the 4680 battery cell lines that feed the truck's structural pack — a deliberate move to remove the supply bottleneck that delayed the program for years.

The plant is engineered for 50,000 trucks a year at full ramp, and the first high-volume unit rolled off the line back in April. As Teslarati noted ahead of the event, the ceremony is symbolic rather than the start of manufacturing — production has been underway and trucks have been reaching customers for months.

Two variants, one powertrain

Production specs are now locked in. Tesla is building a Standard Range version rated at 325 miles and a Long Range version rated at 500 miles. Both use an 800-kW three-motor powertrain producing more than 1,000 horsepower, and both support Tesla's Megacharger, which the company says can restore roughly 70% of range in about 30 minutes.

That charging story is central to Tesla's freight pitch, and the company has been building the infrastructure to match, recently laying out plans to expand its Megacharger network across Europe to support the Semi's international rollout.

Momentum heading into the ribbon-cutting

The timing could hardly be better. The inauguration lands just two days after Tesla was named primary manufacturer for ZET SCALE's record 2,500-truck order, the largest electric Class 8 deal in U.S. history and backed by shippers including Microsoft and PepsiCo. It also follows the Semi's European debut at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover.

Program director Dan Priestley has said production "is now ramping," and analysts expect Tesla to deliver between 5,000 and 15,000 Semis in 2026 as the line scales toward its nameplate capacity. A grand opening gives Tesla a stage to show off that line, talk up the ramp, and frame the Semi as a truck now being built and sold on two continents.

After years of delays, Thursday's ceremony reads less like a formality and more like a victory lap — one Tesla has clearly earned as the orders, the factory and the infrastructure finally come together.
