AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla's electric Semi got a high-profile public showcase this week as Top Gear Tech host Jack Scarlett toured the purpose-built Nevada factory and rode in a finished production truck on public roads, offering the clearest outside look yet at the long-awaited Class 8 hauler.

Scarlett framed the vehicle as the finished article, not a pre-production prototype, roughly eight years after its 2017 unveil. A small pilot fleet reached customers in December 2022, and Tesla says those trucks and later units have logged around 17 million test miles feeding refinements into this production version.

A Factory Built for the Truck

The new Sparks, Nevada plant is a purpose-built Semi facility, about 1.7 million square feet and $3.6 billion, sized for 50,000 trucks a year, or roughly 1,000 a week at full rate. Plant staff told Scarlett the truck and the factory were engineered together around build speed, reliability, and cost, rather than converting a diesel chassis late in the process. Production touches called out on camera include a Model Y-style front with a light bar, a three-piece nose that can be swapped in sections after a bump, powder-coated bodywork instead of a liquid paint shop, and a center driving seat that eliminates left- and right-hand-drive tooling splits.

The efficiency numbers underscore why fleets are watching. Tesla cites roughly 1.7 kWh per mile, range targets of about 325 or 500 miles, three motors producing around 1,076 horsepower, and about 60 percent charge in 30 minutes during a mandated break, aligned with the same Megawatt Charging System behind Tesla's accordion-style Supercharger and Megacharger deployments.

Economics That Favor Electric

On a 3 percent grade, Tesla says the Semi can hold about 65 mph where a diesel often falls to 50. Cost figures shared during the ride were illustrative but striking: at roughly 20 cents per kWh and 1.7 kWh per mile, energy lands near 34 cents a mile versus about a dollar a mile for diesel, with payback often framed under five years depending on local power and fuel prices. Battery packs use 4680 cells and share structure with the frame, while long-range trucks add a third pack in the middle rather than a different chassis.

Scarlett also noted that Europe deliveries are on the board for 2027, lining up with Tesla's recent European Semi debut and 550-kilometer range pitch. Tesla has not published a U.S. retail price or a firm weekly build rate for the open of volume production, and more specifications are available on the official Semi page.

For fleet buyers, the walkthrough delivered something concrete: a dedicated Nevada line rated for tens of thousands of trucks a year, a production cab you can ride in today, and efficiency numbers built around existing rest-break rhythms. With the factory ramping and Europe on the calendar, Tesla's long road to Semi volume is finally reaching the highway.
