At a Glance

The Tesla Model Y is a battery-electric compact crossover SUV and the most successful vehicle Tesla has ever built. Unveiled in March 2019 and first delivered in March 2020, it shares much of its engineering with the Model 3 sedan but adds a taller body, a hatchback and optional third-row seating. Built at Gigafactories in California, Shanghai, Berlin and Texas, the Model Y pioneered large single-piece 'gigacastings' in mass production. In 2023 it became the best-selling car in the world, the first electric vehicle ever to top the global chart. A redesigned version, known during development as 'Juniper,' launched in 2025, followed by lower-cost Standard, high-performance and six-seat Model Y L variants.

Origins and Launch

The Model Y was the final step of the product roadmap Elon Musk outlined in Tesla's 2006 Master Plan and the fourth car in the "S3XY" lineup.[1][2] Tesla unveiled it on March 14, 2019, at its design studio in Hawthorne, California.[2]

Designed to share about three-quarters of its parts with the Model 3, the Model Y could be brought to market quickly and built on existing lines.[2] Deliveries began in March 2020 from the Fremont factory, months ahead of the schedule Tesla had originally given.[2][3]

Engineering and Manufacturing Breakthroughs

The Model Y introduced innovations that changed how cars are made. Tesla developed enormous die-casting machines — known as Giga Presses — to produce the rear underbody as a single aluminum casting, replacing roughly 70 separate parts.[1][4] Later Model Ys built in Texas and Berlin added a front casting and a structural battery pack that forms part of the car's floor.[4]

It was also the first Tesla to use a heat pump for cabin heating, improving winter efficiency, along with the "octovalve" thermal-management system.[3][5] Production expanded from Fremont to Gigafactory Shanghai in 2021 and to Gigafactories Berlin and Texas in 2022.[1]

The World's Best-Selling Car

Price cuts, rising production and strong reviews drove the Model Y to extraordinary heights. In 2023 it became the best-selling car in the world across all fuel types, according to JATO Dynamics, with about 1.22 million sold — a first for any electric vehicle.[3][6][13][14][15][16] It has topped sales charts in many markets, including Norway, Australia, South Korea and, in August 2026, France, where it outsold every gasoline and diesel model.[7][8]

The 2025 Redesign

In January 2025 Tesla launched a heavily updated Model Y, developed under the code name "Juniper." It featured full-width light bars front and rear, a quieter and more refined cabin, ventilated front seats, an eight-inch rear touchscreen, ambient lighting and improved suspension.[5][9] A special "Launch Series" edition sold out quickly in several markets.[9]

Tesla then broadened the range. A lower-priced Model Y Standard arrived in late 2025, and a new Model Y Performance followed; in September 2026 a 635-horsepower version launched in China with 0–100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.[5][10]

Model Y L: Six Seats

The long-wheelbase Model Y L adds a stretched body and a six-seat, three-row layout with second-row captain's chairs. It launched first in China in 2025 and arrived in the United States in 2026, where it is built at Gigafactory Texas.[5][11] Its official EPA range rating of 332 miles beat Tesla's own estimate, and U.S. deliveries began in the late summer of 2026.[11]

Software and Autonomy

Like every Tesla, the Model Y receives over-the-air software updates that add features long after purchase — from new games and entertainment apps to traction-control modes and navigation improvements.[5] It supports Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software, and Model Ys serve alongside the purpose-built Cybercab in Tesla's Robotaxi fleet.[5][12]
