In October 2022 Elon Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, the social network he had long used as his main public platform. He said his goal was to protect free speech and turn Twitter into a 'digital town square' for the world. Musk took the company private, cut its workforce dramatically and rebuilt its product at high speed, introducing paid verification, the crowd-sourced Community Notes fact-checking system, longer posts and video, and revenue sharing for creators. In July 2023 Twitter was renamed X, reviving the brand Musk had first used for his 1999 online bank. In 2025 X combined with Musk's AI company xAI, and in 2026 the combined business became part of SpaceX.

Background

Musk joined Twitter in 2009 and became one of its most-followed users, using it to announce Tesla and SpaceX news and to talk directly with the public.[1][2] Over time he grew concerned that the platform's moderation policies were suppressing legitimate debate and that bots and spam were degrading it.[1][3]

In early 2022 he quietly built a stake of about 9% and in April was offered a board seat, which he declined.[1][8]

The $44 Billion Deal

On April 14, 2022, Musk offered to buy Twitter for $54.20 per share in cash, valuing the company at about $44 billion, and the board accepted on April 25.[1][4][8] Musk said: "Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated."[4]

After months of dispute over the number of fake accounts and a lawsuit in Delaware, the deal closed on October 27, 2022. Musk famously entered Twitter's San Francisco headquarters the day before carrying a sink, captioning the video "let that sink in."[1][8][12]

04

Rebuilding the Company

Musk took Twitter private, became its chief executive and moved quickly to cut costs, reducing a workforce of about 7,500 by roughly 80% over the following months.[1][2][9] Critics predicted the service would collapse; instead it kept running, and Isaacson documents how a smaller, intensely focused team shipped features at a much faster pace.[1]

Early changes included the Twitter Blue subscription with paid verification, the expansion of Community Notes — a system in which users from differing viewpoints add context to misleading posts — and the release of much of the recommendation algorithm's source code.[1][2][9] In June 2023 Musk named advertising executive Linda Yaccarino as CEO, while he focused on product and technology as executive chairman and CTO.[1]

From Twitter to X

In July 2023 Twitter was rebranded as X, with a new logo, and the "tweet" gave way to the "post." The name revived Musk's long-held vision from X.com of an "everything app" combining communication, media and payments.[1][5][10][11]

Under the new brand, X added long-form posts, long video, audio and video calls, creator subscriptions and ad-revenue sharing for creators.[2] It also integrated Grok, the AI assistant built by Musk's xAI, directly into the app.[6][9]

06

Joining xAI and SpaceX

In March 2025 xAI acquired X in an all-stock transaction, valuing X at $33 billion and combining the social platform's data and distribution with xAI's models and compute.[6][13][14] In 2026 SpaceX acquired xAI, bringing X under the SpaceX umbrella; in July 2026 the AI business adopted the SpaceXAI name, putting Grok, X and the Colossus supercomputer under one banner.[6][7][15][16] Supporters see the arc as a completed vision: a global public square connected to one of the world's most advanced AI systems and a satellite network that can reach anyone on Earth.[7]
