Elon Musk's xAI and Grok: Company History and AI Technology

Musk had been involved in AI for years — he co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit counterweight to big tech companies, then left its board in 2018.^[1][2] Concerned that leading AI labs were becoming closed and politically constrained, he founded xAI in March 2023 and announced it publicly on July 12.^[1][3][10]

The founding team included researchers from DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft and Tesla.^[3][10] Musk described the goal as building a "maximally truth-seeking" AI that is curious about the universe, arguing that such an AI would be most likely to be safe and beneficial for humanity.^[2][3]

xAI released its first model, Grok, in November 2023 to X Premium subscribers. The name comes from Robert Heinlein's novel Stranger in a Strange Land, where it means to understand something deeply.^[1][3][8][9] Grok stood out for its access to real-time posts on X and its humorous, irreverent personality, inspired in part by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.^[3]

xAI improved the models at a remarkable pace. It open-sourced the weights of Grok-1 in March 2024, followed by Grok 2, Grok 3 in February 2025 and Grok 4 in July 2025, each posting leading scores on major reasoning and coding benchmarks at launch.^[3][4][10] Grok also gained image generation, voice conversation and a standalone app.^[3]

To train frontier models, xAI built its own supercomputer, Colossus, in a former factory in Memphis, Tennessee. The first phase — 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs — came online in 2024 after about four months of construction, a timeline industry veterans considered astonishing.^[2][4][11] The cluster was quickly doubled and has continued to expand, with Tesla Megapack batteries helping to stabilize its power supply.^[4][12]

Colossus exemplifies Musk's approach of moving much faster than incumbents by building critical infrastructure in-house.^[2]

In March 2025 xAI acquired X in an all-stock deal, uniting the social network's real-time data and distribution with xAI's models and compute.^[4][13] In February 2026 SpaceX acquired xAI in a deal valuing the combined company at $1.25 trillion, linking Musk's AI efforts with the company's launch capability, Starlink network and long-term ideas such as AI data centers in orbit.^{[5][6][14][15][16]}

On July 6, 2026, the division unveiled a new identity, SpaceXAI, completing its integration into SpaceX with Grok, X and Colossus under one banner.^[6]

As SpaceXAI, the team has shortened its release cycle to weeks. Grok 4.5 arrived in July 2026, developed together with the coding company Cursor, and Grok 4.7 followed on September 21, 2026, topping its predecessor on major coding and knowledge-work benchmarks while holding prices at $2 and $6 per million input and output tokens.^[7] The company also launched Grok Bot agents that can complete multi-step tasks, and Musk has pointed to Grok 5 as the model he expects to reach artificial general intelligence.^[7]

Grok is integrated across Musk's companies: it answers questions on X, serves as the voice assistant in Tesla vehicles, and is available to developers through the xAI API.^[4][7]
