AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla has revealed a clever, low-tech touch that will help riders find the right autonomous car once its Cybercab begins carrying the public: a color-coded light bar.
The company confirmed that each Cybercab will use an RGB strip in its front light bar that can glow in a range of colors to mark itself. The same color will appear in the rider's Robotaxi app, so a passenger can match the hue on their phone to the vehicle pulling up to the curb. It is a small idea with an outsized purpose, aimed at removing the confusion that arises when several identical driverless cars converge on the same busy pickup point.
A simple fix for a real problem
Matching a rider to the correct vehicle is one of the quiet but essential challenges of ride-hailing. Get it wrong and passengers climb into the wrong car, trips get misrouted, and fares get charged to the wrong account. Human-driven services lean on a driver's name, face, license plate, and car color to sort it out. A fleet of near-identical, driverless Cybercabs needs a different answer, and Tesla's solution is to let the car announce itself with light.
Rivals have taken their own approaches. Waymo, for example, displays a rider's initials on a rooftop screen. Tesla's color-matching system is arguably more glanceable from a distance, letting a rider lock onto their car from across a plaza the moment it appears. The approach fits neatly with the purpose-built two-seater Tesla has positioned as the centerpiece of its Robotaxi platform, a vehicle designed from the wheels up for autonomy rather than retrofitted from an existing model.
