AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla is turning Full Self-Driving into a full-time guardian angel. A new release, FSD Supervised v14.3.9, adds an active safety feature that can take control to avoid a crash even when the driver is steering manually, the company's AI team announced Friday morning.

The idea is simple and powerful: standard Automatic Emergency Braking slows or stops the car, but some collisions can only be avoided by steering. The new system lets FSD take directional control and guide the vehicle around an obstacle when braking alone will not be enough, extending the same neural-network intelligence behind Tesla's latest FSD voice and behavior updates to moments when the software is not even switched on.

A Safety Net That Is Always On

Until now, FSD only worked when a driver engaged it. With v14.3.9, a slice of the same v14 software stack runs quietly in the background during manual driving, ready to intervene in an emergency. Tesla says the feature "can now activate on your behalf when an imminent collision is detected," according to the company's announcement reported by Electrek.

The system can engage in two situations: when a crash is imminent and braking cannot solve it, and when it detects that the driver is heavily distracted or has accidentally disengaged FSD. In effect, the car keeps watching the road even in the split seconds a human might look away.

Evasive steering is one of the most valuable capabilities an advanced driver-assistance system can offer. AEB has already prevented countless crashes across the industry, and giving the car the ability to steer around a hazard it cannot brake for is the logical next step. Tesla is applying its enormous real-world data advantage, more than ten billion fleet miles, to make those split-second decisions.
